Industrial Pollution
A
large portion of Houston's air pollution comes from industrial
sources.
Houston's large industrial base emits large amounts of highly
reactive volatile organic compounds and
nitrogen oxides as well as
sulfur dioxide,
particulate matter, and
mercury. In addition,
research suggests that Houston has higher levels of
hazardous air pollutants than
most other urban areas, in large part due to the concentration of
petrochemical industry in the region.
